Israeli Cabinet Has Yet to Vote on Gaza Cease-Fire Deal: Live Updates
    The New York Times

The long-sought, tortuously negotiated world/israel-hamas-cease-fire-deal-gaza” title=””>Gaza cease-fire deal announced on Wednesday came about in part through a remarkable collaboration between President Biden and President-elect Donald J. Trump, who temporarily put aside mutual animosity to achieve a mutual goal.

The two presidents directed their advisers to work together to push Israel and Hamas over the finish line for world/middleeast/gaza-ceasefire-what-we-know.html” title=””>an agreement to halt the fighting that has ravaged Gaza and release hostages who have been held there for 15 months. The deal is set to start on Sunday, the day before Mr. Biden turns over the White House to Mr. Trump.

Each president had his own interest in settling the matter before Inauguration Day. For Mr. Biden, the deal, if it holds, represents a final vindication on his watch, what he hopes will be the end of the deadliest war in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict while freeing Americans as well as Israelis from captivity. For Mr. Trump, the deal, for now, takes a major issue off the table as he opens a second term, freeing him to pursue other priorities.

The dramatic development, just five days before the transfer of power in the United States, cut against the natural grain in Washington, where presidents of opposing parties rarely work in tandem during a transition, even in the face of a major crisis. But the political planets quickly returned to their normal orbits as both sides argued over who deserved credit for resolving the standoff.

While Mr. Biden waited for official word to come from the region, Mr. Trump got the jump on him by disclosing the deal himself in an all-caps social media post. “This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November,” he added soon afterward.

By the time Mr. Biden appeared before cameras at the White House later in the afternoon, he was more gracious, noting that the two teams spoke with one voice. But he bristled when asked who merited credit, he or Mr. Trump. “Is that a joke?” he asked.

Mr. Biden said the two teams worked together on the deal, but bristled at the question of who merited credit.Credit…Pete Marovich for The New York Times

Still, the partnership, awkward and prickly as it was, stood out in an era of deep polarization. “It really is extraordinary,” said Mara Rudman, who was deputy special envoy for Middle East peace under President Barack Obama. “Everybody’s talking about who gets credit, but the fact is that it’s shared and part of the reason it worked is that it’s shared.”

That was not to say that it would lead to enduring synergy on this or other issues. “This was a case where the right thing to do aligned with people’s best political interest as well,” said Ms. Rudman, now a scholar at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center.

However credit is ultimately apportioned, diplomats, officials and analysts said it seemed clear that both presidents had played important roles. The deal that was finally agreed to was essentially the same one that Mr. Biden had put on the table last May and that his envoys, led by Brett H. McGurk, his Middle East coordinator, had worked painstakingly to make acceptable to both sides.

At the same time, Mr. Trump’s impending return to power and his blustery threat, that “all hell will break out” if the hostages were not released by the time he was sworn in, clearly changed the calculations of the warring parties. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, the beneficiary of so much support from Mr. Trump during his first term, could not take for granted that the new president would back him if he prolonged the war during his second term.

Indeed, it was telling that Mr. Netanyahu, who goes by the nickname Bibi, called Mr. Trump first to thank him after the deal was announced and only then called Mr. Biden. In a statement, Mr. Netanyahu emphasized his gratitude to Mr. Trump “for his remarks that the United States will work with Israel to ensure that Gaza will never be a terrorist haven.” Mr. Biden was not mentioned until the fourth paragraph and only in a single sentence that thanked him “as well” for his assistance.

Mr. Trump’s desire to force a deal went beyond his trademark public threats and extended to constructive assistance on the ground. He authorized Steve Witkoff, his longtime friend whom he picked as special envoy for the Middle East, to work with Mr. McGurk to press negotiators to finalize the agreement. Mr. McGurk and his team were happy to have the help and use Mr. Witkoff’s support as leverage.

“This was Biden’s deal,” former Representative Tom Malinowski, Democrat of New Jersey, wrote on social media, “but as much as I hate to say it, he couldn’t have done it without Trump — not so much Trump’s performative threats to Hamas, but his willingness to tell Bibi bluntly that the war had to end by Jan. 20.”

There were some Republicans who were willing to praise Mr. Biden for his efforts to forge the agreement along with Mr. Trump. “It is good to see the Biden Administration and Trump Transition working together to get this deal done,” Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina wrote on social media.

Few transitions have seen such a moment of intersecting interests. In the throes of the Great Depression, the defeated President Herbert Hoover tried to engage President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt to team up to address a bank crisis, only to be rebuffed by an incoming leader who did not want to be tied to his predecessor.

A more world/middleeast/gaza-hostage-deal-trump-inauguration-iran-1981.html” title=””>eerily haunting example came 44 years ago, when President Jimmy Carter labored until the final hours of his presidency to free 52 American hostages being held in Iran without help from his successor, President-elect Ronald Reagan. In fact, some evidence has emerged suggesting that people around Mr. Reagan tried to discourage Iran from releasing the hostages before the election for fear that it would help Mr. Carter, although official investigations never verified that.

Mr. Biden’s team recalled how Iran, in 1981, held back planes with hostages it was releasing until after Jimmy Carter’s successor, Ronald Reagan, was sworn into office.Credit…Mark Goecks/Associated Press

Mr. Carter ultimately struck a deal to free the hostages, but in a final insult Iran held back the planes with the Americans onboard until moments after Mr. Reagan was sworn in on Jan. 20, 1981. That memory was not lost on Mr. Biden’s team in recent weeks, especially after Mr. Carter’s death last month. Administration officials and their allies in recent days had been morbidly mulling the possibility of history repeating itself.

The coming change in political leadership in the United States was not the only factor driving the negotiations over the war in Gaza. The situation on the ground has changed dramatically since Mr. Biden first offered his cease-fire proposal in May.

In the interim, Israel has decapitated the leadership of Hamas, all but demolished its allied militia Hezbollah in Lebanon and taken out key military facilities in Iran. A Biden-brokered world/middleeast/israel-lebanon-ceasefire.html” title=””>cease-fire in Lebanon left Hamas without a second front against Israel, further isolating it. And the world/middleeast/assad-regime-syria-final-days.html” title=””>fall of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria only reinforced the weakness of Iran and its allies and proxies.

But the looming Inauguration Day in Washington created a new action-forcing deadline that was hard to ignore. Mr. Trump said little during the campaign about the war, but when he did he made it clear that he was not happy about it and urged Israel to wrap it up as soon as possible because the heart-wrenching pictures of death and destruction in Gaza were damaging Israel’s reputation on the international stage.

Moreover, Mr. Trump’s relationship with Mr. Netanyahu has evolved since his first term, when he presented himself as the Israeli leader’s staunchest ally. Mr. Trump cut aid to the Palestinians, world/middleeast/trump-jerusalem-israel-capital.html” title=””>moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, recognized Israeli authority over the Golan Heights and presided over diplomatic openings between Israel and several of its Arab neighbors.

But their ties soured in Mr. Trump’s final year in office when he perceived Mr. Netanyahu to be taking advantage, and they deteriorated even further when the prime minister congratulated Mr. Biden on a victory in the 2020 election that Mr. Trump still denies. Mr. Netanyahu has worked assiduously in recent months to make up with Mr. Trump.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, middle, has been working to repair his relationship with Mr. Trump in recent months.Credit…Doug Mills/The New York Times

As for Mr. Biden, his own relationship with Mr. Netanyahu has been strained since the days soon after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led terrorist attack, when he world/middleeast/biden-israel-visit-gaza-hospital-strike.html” title=””>flew to Israel and hugged the Israeli leader on the tarmac. Biden advisers and allies have suspected that Mr. Netanyahu was deliberately holding off on a cease-fire deal to hand the victory to Mr. Trump in an effort to kowtow to him.

Mr. Biden said nothing about that during his televised remarks on Wednesday. But after 15 months of trying to manage the Middle East crisis and head off a wider regional war, he appeared relieved to see an end coming.

“I’m deeply satisfied this day has come, finally come, for the sake of the people of Israel and the families waiting in agony and for the sake of the innocent people in Gaza who suffered unimaginable devastation because of the war,” Mr. Biden said.

He referred to the collaboration with Mr. Trump without mentioning him by name. “I’d also note this deal was developed and negotiated under my administration,” Mr. Biden said, flanked by Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken. “But its terms will be implemented for the most part by the next administration. These past few days, we’ve been speaking as one team.”

Celebrations of the annoucement of a cease-fire in Ramallah, West Bank.Credit…Afif Amireh for The New York Times

Asked about Mr. Trump’s role, Mr. Biden noted that the cease-fire was “the exact framework of the deal I proposed back in May” and claimed credit for giving Israel the backing it needed to weaken Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran. “I knew this deal would have to be implemented by the next team,” he added, “so I told my team to coordinate closely with the incoming team to make sure we’re all speaking with the same voice because that’s what American presidents do.”

Mr. Trump made no mention of the role of his predecessor’s team and left the impression in his social media posts that he had delivered the agreement by himself.

“We have achieved so much without even being in the White House,” he wrote. “Just imagine all of the wonderful things that will happen when I return to the White House, and my Administration is fully confirmed, so they can secure more Victories for the United States!”

Diddy wished for Prince William and Harry to attend his parties

Sean Diddy Combs, who has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in New York City, since his arrest, once wanted to invite the royals to his infamous parties.

The 55-year-old rapper discussed his wish to invite Prince William and Harry to one of his ‘Freak Off’ parties, in an old interview which is now making rounds all over internet.

Diddy revealed his desire to invite them in The Graham Norton Show in 2011.

As per Access Hollywood, the disgraced music mogul detailed that the princes could not attend his parties as they were settling into their royal duties and adjusting into their adult roles and responsibilities.

However, the Bad Boy Records founder expressed his wish that Prince William and Prince Harry could have attended his parties a few years earlier.

The Last Night rapper told the host that the two royals could have attended his parties when they were younger and “getting into a lot of trouble themselves.” He added, “So hey, I was like, why won’t you hang out with me?”

When the show’s host asked Diddy at the time if he would still like to invite them, he responded, “Trust me, they are off the list.”

Prince Harry and Prince William never attended any of the white parties that allegedly involved a lot of illegal activites.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly taking a tough stand on issues of indiscipline among Indian cricketers, with new regulations being discussed to streamline player conduct and commitment. A BCCI source revealed, “Indian cricketers are indisciplined. Gautam [Gambhir] and one senior player are on the same page on the topic of family stay.”

The players will also be barred from taking independent transport to commute during practice and matches. For a tour of 45 days, the family members of the players can only be with them for not more than 14 days. Meanwhile, during shorter tours in foreign countries, the immediate family members of a play can stay up to a week.

Additionally, a senior player suggested a bold move during a recent meeting withholding match fees from players who choose to skip domestic tournaments.

“One senior player was in the meeting to suggest the idea to BCCI of not distributing the match fee to players those who doesn’t want to play domestic,” the source added.

In a bid to further enforce discipline, the BCCI has also decided to bar players from travelling with personal staff, including cooks, hairdressers, stylists, or personal security guards, on tours.

“Players are not allowed to travel with their personal staff (cook, hairdresser, stylist, no personal security guard) on tour any more,” the source further stated.

The board’s stringent measures are aimed at ensuring a more professional and unified team culture while prioritizing the development of cricket at all levels.

Team India suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Australia in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and lost the opportunity to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s.

Reacting to the PTI’s judicial probe demand into the May 9 and November 26 events, Prime Minister’s aide on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said that both incidents have already been investigated.

Addressing a press conference flanked by the government’s negotiation committee head Senator Irfan Siddiqui on Thursday, the PM’s aide said, however, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a committee comprising all ruling party members to review the opposition party’s demands.

The committee will respond to the PTI on its demands, he added.

Earlier today, the PTI finally presented its demands in writing, seeking probes into the May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024 events, as well as the release of “political prisoners”.

PTI’s ‘Charter of Demands’, available with Geo News, also mentions that if the government fails to constitute two separate commissions on the violent events, the party will not continue the negotiations.

It has a coverage guard around the propellers, which is claimed to protect the drone from damage.

    DJI Flip Price, Availability

DJI Flip pricing starts at $439 (roughly Rs. 38,000). The company is also bundling accessories with the drone. The DJI Flip with RC 2 Remote Controller costs $639 (roughly Rs. 55,000) while the DJI Flip Fly More Combo (DJI RC 2) is priced at $779 (roughly Rs. 67,000).

The all-in-one vlog drone is available for purchase from the official DJI online store along with authorised retail partners, with shipping already having commenced.

    DJI Flip Specifications

As per the company, DJI Flip is equipped with a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with Dual Native ISO Fusion, f/1.7 aperture, and 2.4 micron 4-in-1 pixels. It can capture 48-megapixel still photos and those with up to 4x zoom. The drone’s SmartPhoto feature combines HDR imaging, scene recognition, and more to create vibrant images. It is also capable of recording videos in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (fps) along with slow-motion recording at 4K 100fps and 10-bit D-Log M colour mode.

DJI says the 4:3 CMOS sensor enables the drone to maintain a 2.7K resolution even with vertical crops, making it optimal for smartphone and social media viewing. Leveraging algorithms, the DJI Flip’s AI Subject Tracking feature follows the subject and keeps them in focus, even during activities such as cycling, skateboarding or hiking. It has six different shooting modes — Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, Helix, and Boomerang.

The drone’s MasterShots feature can automatically execute diverse camera movements, shoot multiple clips and edit them with music, cuts, and effects to output cinematic footage. Meanwhile, operators can choose from Free, Circle, Course Lock, and Waypoint hyperlapse options to capture time lapse footage at up to 4K horizontally or 2.7K vertically.

It also offers support for the FocusTrack suite with ActiveTrack 4.0, Spotlight 2.0, and Point of Interest 3.0 tools which aid in storytelling, according to the company. Using DJI Flip, users can shoot 180-degree, Wide Angle, Vertical, and Sphere panoramic photos.

The DJI Flip is equipped with 3D Infrared Sensing System which supports automatic braking. It can offer up to 31 minutes of flight time on a single charge. This drone can be operated without a remote control. However, the company claims that it can also be paired with the DJI Fly app, DJI RC-N3, and RC 2 remote controllers. When paired with the latter, DJI O4 video transmission ranges to up to 13 kilometres with support for 1080p 60fps video transmission.

Hamas has reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire agreement while Israeli approval of the deal remains delayed.

The Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas has reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire agreement announced on Wednesday, despite Israeli claims of last-minute changes by the Palestinian group.

Izzat al-Rishq, a senior Hamas leader, stated on Thursday that the movement is fully committed to the terms of the ceasefire agreement.

This comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s earlier statements, which suggested that Hamas had backed away from certain parts of the agreement, delaying israel’s approval.

Netanyahu claimed that Hamas was attempting to extract additional concessions and insisted that the Israeli government would not set a date for a security cabinet meeting until the mediators confirmed that Hamas had agreed to all aspects of the deal.

Following this, Israeli Army Radio reported that a scheduled cabinet meeting was postponed indefinitely, with no new date set for the session.

An unnamed Israeli official later added that the ceasefire would not be officially implemented until both the Israeli government and the Security Cabinet gave their approval.

The ceasefire agreement, which marks a significant step toward ending the 15-month Israeli military campaign in gaza, was announced by Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, during a press conference in Doha on Wednesday evening.

The agreement is set to take effect on Sunday, pending the approval of both parties involved. Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have pledged to work closely to ensure the successful implementation of the deal.

The announcement follows months of intensive negotiations and a prolonged conflict that has resulted in devastating casualties, with over 46,000 Palestinians killed and more than 110,000 injured since the beginning of the Israeli offensive.

Following the announcement, Israeli forces continued to carry out massacres throughout gaza, killing at least 71 Palestinians and wounding over 200 more, according to the Civil Defense.

    Ongoing Genocide

The ongoing Israeli assault on the gaza Strip, which began on October 7, 2023, has led to a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale. As the death toll among besieged and starved Palestinian civilians continues to rise daily, israel is currently facing charges of genocide against Palestinians before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

According to gaza’s Ministry of Health, at least 46,707 Palestinians have been israel-to-withdraw-from-gaza-50-palestinians-killed-in-ongoing-strikes-day-468/”>killed, and 110,265 wounded in israel’s ongoing genocide in gaza starting on October 7, 2023.

The toll is expected to rise further, with at least 11,000 people still unaccounted for, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes across gaza.

The war, which Palestinians call “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” began after a military operation carried out by Hamas on Israeli territory. israel reports that 1,139 of its soldiers and civilians were killed during the initial attack on October 7. However, Israeli media have raised concerns that a significant number of Israeli casualties were caused by ‘friendly fire’ during the assault.

Human rights organizations, both Palestinian and international, have reported that the overwhelming majority of the casualties in gaza are women and children. The ongoing violence has also exacerbated an acute famine, with thousands of children among the dead, highlighting the severity of the humanitarian disaster.

The war has displaced nearly two million people from their homes across gaza, with the majority of the displaced forced into the already overcrowded southern region of the Strip. The population in gaza remains trapped in the ongoing conflict, with little access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical care.

Big picture: Expect plenty of turn in Multan

The timing of this series does not exactly help raise its profile. It comes after the top two World Test Championship (WTC) berths have been decided at the tail-end of the cycle. West Indies are at the bottom of the standings, Pakistan only fractionally ahead of them. This series was originally due to be held in January 2024 and would have carried the potential to turn a side’s cycle around but T20Is against New Zealand replaced it. This time, in that larger competition, it is little more than a basement battle.

At a remove from the WTC, though, there’s more intrigue. West Indies will be playing a Test in Pakistan after more than 18 years, although they have played Pakistan in the UAE in the meantime. This series will be a continuation of the PCB’s experiment, so successful against England last year, to turn the pitches in Pakistan into havens for spin bowling. It was in Multan, where both Tests against West Indies will be held, that this was first tried. Pakistan have made no secret they will look to replicate it there again, with heaters and a makeshift greenhouse making this look as much cutting-edge horticulture as pitch preparation.

They have the squad, especially the bowlers, for such conditions, too. The express quicks have been left out, and Sajid Khan is back to partner Noman Ali, as is Abrar Ahmed, who had missed the last two Tests against England with illness. Shan Masood continues to lead the side. He will open the innings in a batting line-up that has also seen a tweak. Abdullah Shafique’s loss of form and Saim Ayub’s injury have pushed Masood up the order and also brought debutant Muhammad Hurraira into the fold.

But the spin-experiment could meet more resistance from West Indies than it did from England. The latter attempted to subdue Pakistan with the same cavalier belligerence that has served them well on flatter tracks, ending up playing right into the hosts’ hands. West Indies are unlikely to do the same, and while they do not possess a star-studded batting line-up, they will show up with one that has experience in these conditions – as well as a spin attack that can potentially thrive in them.

However, West Indies sit at the bottom of the WTC points table for a reason. Their results – both at home and away – haven’t been consistent enough. The exhilarating win over Australia in Brisbane feels like a long time ago. It was followed up by England clean-sweeping them away, a home series defeat against South Africa, and a drawn one against Bangladesh.

They are aware things need to change, and have made a significant call already; vice-captain Joshua Da Silva has been dropped after a run of underwhelming performances with the bat. However, Brathwaite and his team will know their problems run deeper than that, and this series allows them, at the very least, the chance to move off the bottom.

    Form guide

Pakistan: LLWWL (last five Tests, most recent first)
    West Indies: LWLDL

In the spotlight: Saud Shakeel and Gudakesh Motie

Batters proficient at negotiating spin-friendly conditions will become invaluable, and this is where Saud Shakeel comes in. In theory, Shakeel should thrive with the slow, low turn Multan will provide. But he has, somewhat counter-intuitively, suggested he enjoys playing on quicker wickets. And in Pakistan’s most recent Test in Multan against England, where spin was heavily favoured, Shakeel scored 35 runs across two innings. On the whole, though, he still averages over 50 in six innings on this ground, and if he can come close to matching that in what is likely to be a quick, low-scoring game, he could well be a point of difference with the bat.

Few people should enjoy this series more than Gudakesh Motie. West Indies’ perceived greater spin ability than England makes the preparation of slow-turning tracks potentially riskier than it was against England, and it is the left-arm orthodox that Pakistan will be most wary of. Nine Tests in, Motie’s ceiling remains to be determined, but his height gives him a whole array of options to work with on surfaces conducive to his skill set. Motie has a better bowling average than Sajid and almost the same as that of Noman – Pakistan’s most potent threats in these conditions against England – even if 19 of his 28 wickets have come against Zimbabwe.

Team news: Roach unwell, Da Silva dropped

Pakistan have named their XI, featuring three spinners, as well as debutant Muhammad Hurraira to open.

Pakistan (probable): 1 Shan Masood (capt), 2 Muhammad Hurraira, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Kamran Ghulam, 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Salman Agha, 8 Noman Ali, 9 Sajid Khan, 10 Abrar Ahmed, 11 Khurram Shahzad

Kemar Roach is unwell, while Anderson Phillip is not likely to be picked either in what is set to be a spin-heavy West Indies side. In Roach’s absence, their seam attack will be led by Jayden Seales. Meanwhile, Da Silva has been dropped, with uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo all but set to debut.

West Indies (probable): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 Mikyle Louis, 3 Justin Greaves, 4 Keacy Carty/Tevin Imlach, 5 Alick Athanaze, 6 Kavem Hodge, 7 Amir Jangoo (wk), 8 Gudakesh Motie, 9 Kevin Sinclair, 10 Jomel Warrican, 11 Jayden Seales

    Pitch and conditions

This is the question, isn’t it? Pakistan continue to rage against the elements, determined to suck the Multan surface dry in bitter cold by erecting a greenhouse on the square to heat the surface up. This has never been attempted here in January before, though Pakistan did succeed in bending the Rawalpindi surface against England to their will in October. If they’re successful once more, expect significant turn right from the outset, and for spin to operate almost across the Test without pause. The weather, meanwhile, is expected to be bitterly cold.

    Stats and trivia

    • Kraigg Brathwaite is 99 runs away from surpassing Richie Richardson’s Test tally, and 149 away from becoming the tenth West Indies batter to score 6000 Test runs.
    • The last Test these two sides played in Multan, in November 2006, saw just 27 wickets fall across more than 439 overs and five days, with more than 1400 runs scored.
