Beware of Free Public Wi-Fi: Essential Tips for Travelers

WASHINGTON: A recent study by Saily, an eSIM provider, reveals that 58% of American travelers opt for free public Wi-Fi networks during their trips, citing convenience and cost-effectiveness. However, experts warn that such networks pose significant cybersecurity risks.

Vykintas Maknickas, head of product strategy at Nord Security, explains, “Public Wi-Fi exposes users to various cyber threats, such as man-in-the-middle attacks where malicious actors intercept communications to steal data or install malware. Session hijacking and rogue hotspots are also common, putting travelers’ sensitive information at risk.”

In addition to these threats, hackers can deploy tactics like setting up rogue hotspots or evil twin attacks, where they mimic legitimate networks to deceive unsuspecting users. These methods allow attackers to intercept sensitive data or gain unauthorized access to devices.

The survey also highlights that a substantial portion of travelers spend considerable time online, with activities ranging from communication and social media sharing to financial transactions. Maknickas advises caution, particularly when handling financial matters over public Wi-Fi, suggesting mobile data as a more secure alternative.

“For tasks involving sensitive information, such as online banking, using mobile internet or secure options like VPNs is strongly recommended,” Maknickas emphasizes. “Modern solutions like eSIMs provide secure, flexible internet access without compromising on security.”

To mitigate risks when using public Wi-Fi, experts recommend the following precautions:
