Samsung is set to launch a new service called SmartThings Family Care, aimed at easing the responsibilities of caregivers. As the Mayo Clinic reports, about one in three adults in the US is involved in caregiving, highlighting a significant need for supportive technology. SmartThings Family Care is designed to address this need by integrating with Samsung’s smart home devices.

Starting tomorrow, US-based Samsung smartphone owners will be able to access this service. It leverages the SmartThings platform to offer a range of features tailored to assist with the care of aging individuals or those needing help with daily activities. The service includes comprehensive tools for schedule management, activity notifications, medication reminders, and location-based alerts.

With SmartThings Family Care, caregivers will receive notifications if any irregularities are detected in their loved ones’ routines. For example, the system can identify when the first activity of the day occurs, such as using a Samsung smartphone, providing reassurance that the person is up and about.

Additionally, the service can remind family members to monitor health metrics like blood pressure and blood sugar and schedule medical appointments through Samsung devices. Alerts are also sent when a loved one arrives at or departs from a location, which can be particularly useful for managing medical visits and pharmacy trips.

The Family Care service allows caregivers to set up automations to conserve energy and enhance air quality. For instance, it can turn off appliances when no one is home and activate an air purifier when outdoor pollution levels rise.

SmartThings Family Care will be available through the Life tab of the SmartThings app in the US. Samsung has promised ongoing updates and expansions to the service, aiming to further support caregivers in their important roles.
