Pakistan has firmly ruled out any possibility of holding talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), attributing the decision to the group’s involvement in the killing of both Pakistani and foreign nationals. Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, in a weekly press briefing in Islamabad, emphasized the gravity of the TTP’s actions within Pakistan. She reiterated the country’s expectation for Afghan authorities to take action against terrorist groups using Afghan soil as a launchpad for cross-border attacks.
Baloch addressed questions about the repatriation of Afghan refugees, affirming Pakistan’s commitment to the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan (IFRP). She clarified that the plan aims to enforce Pakistan’s laws and that illegal immigrants from various countries, including Afghans, have already been repatriated. Despite misconceptions, the government had not promised the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) any suspension of the repatriation plan. The Proof of Registration cards for Afghan refugees have been extended for another year.
During a meeting with Pakistani officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz, UNHCR Filippo Grandi appreciated Pakistan’s temporary hold on the repatriation plan, seeking further assurance on the matter. Baloch also touched on Pakistan’s robust partnership with the United States, emphasizing mutual respect, sovereign equality, and non-interference as the basis for future relations.
In her briefing, Baloch reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to supporting the Kashmiri people politically, diplomatically, and morally in their quest for a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir dispute, in line with UN Security Council resolutions. She announced that July 13 would mark the 93rd ‘Youm-e-Shuhada-e-Kashmir’ (Kashmir Martyrs Day), honoring the 1931 martyrdom of 22 Kashmiris. She noted that the movement for Kashmiri rights continues, drawing parallels between the historic Dogra forces and modern Indian occupation forces, which have martyred thousands of Kashmiris.
Baloch also condemned the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza, highlighting the tragic loss of women and children in schools. She labeled these acts as part of Israel’s ongoing genocidal campaign against the people of Gaza.
