  • Family of boy killed in 2022 car accident protests outside the National Press Club.
  • The vehicle involved belonged to the Lahore High Court, sparking demands for justice.
  • Investigation stalled; family calls for action against those responsible.

The family of Shakeel Tanoli, a boy who died in a car accident in June 2022, has set up a protest camp outside the National Press Club in Islamabad, demanding justice. Shakeel and another victim were struck by a speeding vehicle in the Khanna area of Islamabad. The vehicle, it was later revealed, was registered to the Lahore High Court, which has added to the family’s frustration and calls for accountability.

Shakeel’s father, Rafaqat Tanoli, pursued legal action after the police investigation seemed to stall. He approached the Islamabad High Court, citing the Islamabad police’s lack of progress in the case. The protestors are insisting that those responsible for Shakeel’s death be held accountable.

On June 8, 2022, Shakeel Tanoli and his colleague, Hasnain Ali, were hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) allegedly driven by a woman who fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind. The SUV was later seized by the police and handed over to a Lahore High Court official under a ‘superdari’ arrangement, meaning it was to be produced in court when required. However, the investigation has not progressed as expected, prompting the family to take their demands to the streets.
