Meta's WhatsApp enhances group chat safety with new feature

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has unveiled a new feature aimed at addressing the issue of receiving group invites from unfamiliar users within the instant messaging app.

Called “context cards,” this feature provides users with additional information when they receive a group invite from someone not in their contacts. It includes essential details such as the group’s creation date, a brief description of its purpose, and information about the group’s creator.

According to reports from Android Authority, while this information may seem basic, it allows users to make an informed decision about joining the group or declining the invitation.

Moreover, the context cards serve as a protective measure against online group scams. If users still find the invite suspicious, they can report, block, or immediately leave the group to safeguard their privacy and security.

WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announced the rollout of these group chat context cards via his channel on the messaging app. The feature has begun its global rollout and is expected to be available to all users over the next few weeks, as per a WhatsApp press release.

With the introduction of context cards, WhatsApp aims to enhance user control and security, ensuring that group interactions remain safe and transparent for its global user base.
