The war in Ukraine, now in its 891st day, has seen significant developments. In the Donetsk region, a Russian shell hit a residential area, killing one person and injuring two others. The attack, involving a UMPB D-30 glide bomb, left the area in flames and residents in shock as rescue workers battled the blaze.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commended his forces for their successful strikes against Russian military targets, including the Morozovsk airfield and a B-237 submarine in Crimea. Meanwhile, Ukraine has faced numerous attacks, with officials reporting that Ukrainian air defenses shot down five drones in the Kherson region and one drone caused a fire in Mykolaiv, though no casualties were reported.

In diplomatic news, Senegal has called in the Ukrainian ambassador after a video supporting recent attacks against Mali and its Russian allies stirred controversy. Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza, recently released from prison, claimed that many Russians oppose President Putin’s war in Ukraine. Ukraine’s human rights commissioner has also urged international bodies to investigate disturbing reports of a Ukrainian prisoner of war being killed and dismembered by Russian forces.

On the economic front, the US ratings agency S&P has downgraded Ukraine’s credit rating to “selective default” due to the country’s failure to make a bond payment, reflecting the severe financial strain of the ongoing conflict.

In a rare moment of celebration, Ukraine won its first gold medal at the Paris Olympics in the women’s sabre team event. The victory was a bright spot amid the war, with President Zelenskyy celebrating the triumph as proof of Ukrainian resilience and success.
