Karachi Braces for Heavy Rain: PMD Predicts Torrential Downpours

  • Karachi will face torrential rain with thunderstorms starting Sunday.
  • The PMD warns of up to 100mm of rainfall in some areas.
  • Sindh’s Local Government Minister urges prayers for manageable rainfall.

Karachi is preparing for severe weather conditions as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts heavy rain and thunderstorms to hit the city on Sunday. This follows a period of moderate to heavy sporadic rain that has already affected various parts of the metropolis, including Sharea Faisal, Malir, MA Jinnah Road, Saddar, and the Old City Area. The city experienced drizzling this morning, with winds blowing from the southwest at 11 kilometers per hour and an 85% humidity level.

The PMD’s updated forecast predicts one or two intense rain spells from August 4 to 7, potentially delivering between 40mm and 60mm of rainfall, with some areas possibly receiving up to 100mm. Despite the forecast, temperatures may rise to around 32°C during the day.

Heavy rain showers earlier on July 31 caused significant flooding in low-lying areas of Karachi. Areas such as Saddar, II Chundrigar Road, Baldia Town, Defence, and North Karachi were particularly affected. In response to these conditions, Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani has called on residents to pray for manageable rainfall, emphasizing that the drainage system may not be able to handle large volumes of water swiftly. He acknowledged that, while improvements are ongoing, the capacity to handle heavy rains remains limited and urged understanding from the public, noting that even developed countries face challenges with rainwater accumulation on roads.
