Microsoft has warned that Iran is significantly stepping up its efforts to influence the U.S. elections this fall. According to a report from the Microsoft Threat Analysis Centre, Iranian-linked entities are behind fake news sites like “Nio Thinker” and “Savannah Time,” which target different political audiences with misleading content.

These sites are reportedly using AI to plagiarize material from U.S. publications and are part of broader campaigns aimed at stirring controversy and swaying voters in crucial swing states. Microsoft’s Clint Watts noted that these operations are designed to gather intelligence on political campaigns and potentially impact future elections.

The report also reveals that since March, another Iranian group has been impersonating social and political activists online, setting up for activities intended to intimidate or incite violence against political figures. This group’s actions seem aimed at creating chaos and casting doubt on the integrity of the elections. Additionally, an Iranian group linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard has breached the email account of a former presidential campaign adviser.
