Yongsan Police have delivered an important update on BTS‘ Suga’s DUI case, revealing that the investigation has concluded and that the case will be forwarded to prosecutors within the week. The investigation started when Suga was found intoxicated on the scooter on August 6, which led to widespread media coverage and public scrutiny. As of August 26, TV Chosun reports that the police have determined no further investigation is necessary. They also addressed and clarified an additional point of contention that the scooter Suga was riding does not require a license plate, which has resolved some of the surrounding controversy.
The case took another turn on August 23, when Suga appeared at the Yongsan Police Station for questioning. During his appearance, he bowed to the assembled media and issued a public apology, expressing regret for the incident. Additionally, Suga posted a second apology on Weverse, addressing his fans and supporters directly. Although Initial reports had suggested that Suga would attend the station on August 22, this information was later corrected.
Suga’s legal representation is being handled by the same lawyer who previously managed former Super Junior member Kangin’s DUI case. This lawyer, recognized for specializing in criminal cases within the entertainment industry, also dealt with Kangin’s legal issues following his 2016 DUI incident, where he crashed into a streetlight. Kangin was fined 7 million KRW and chose not to appeal the ruling.
In the wake of the DUI charge, Suga has been officially charged under the Road Traffic Act. His license has been revoked, and a fine has been imposed. Suga admitted to the wrongdoing, stating his lack of awareness regarding the legalities surrounding scooter use under the influence. Despite his admission, he has publicly apologized to his fans, expressing his commitment to improving his behavior moving forward.
Currently, Suga is serving his mandatory military service in South Korea as a public service worker. He began his service on September 22, 2023, and underwent basic training at the Nonsan Training Center in Chungcheongnam-do. As part of his role, he works from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is permitted to return home after his shift. SUGA is scheduled to be discharged from military service in June 2025.
