Summary:

  • A Lahore man has been detained for spreading fake news that ignited anti-immigrant riots in the UK.
  • The riots were sparked by misinformation about the identity of a suspect involved in a tragic stabbing attack in July.
  • British authorities have arrested over 1,000 people in connection with the unrest, with ongoing legal proceedings.

Lahore police have arrested Farhan Asif, a journalist accused of spreading false information that led to severe anti-immigrant riots in the United Kingdom. The riots erupted following misleading reports about the suspect in a July 29 stabbing attack in Southport, which resulted in the deaths of three young girls and injuries to several others. The misinformation falsely suggested that the suspect was a Muslim immigrant, fueling widespread unrest and attacks on mosques, asylum centers, and immigrant homes across Britain.

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran confirmed that Asif was apprehended in Lahore and handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime wing for further questioning. According to the Lahore police, Asif’s news platform published the misleading story, which rapidly went viral and exacerbated the tensions in the UK.

UK authorities have responded to the riots by arresting over 1,000 people, with 575 facing formal charges. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to address the disorder that spread across multiple cities in England and Northern Ireland. Farhan Asif has reportedly admitted to publishing the story without anticipating its viral impact, leading to significant violence and unrest.

The stabbing attack, which claimed the lives of Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, involved a 17-year-old suspect whose identity has not been disclosed due to his age. The spread of false claims about his background intensified anti-immigrant sentiments, prompting violent reactions and protests throughout the UK.
