NATO leaders gathered in Washington on Wednesday for the alliance’s 75th anniversary, amidst escalating concerns over Ukraine and a backdrop of intense US electoral scrutiny. President Joe Biden, hosting the summit, sought to rally Western support while addressing doubts about his fitness for office at the age of 81.

The summit kicked off with a celebratory event where Biden announced new air defense measures for Kyiv and called for unity against Russian President Vladimir Putin, who initiated the Ukraine invasion in 2022. Biden’s resolute statement—”Make no mistake. Ukraine can—and will—stop Putin”—was met with applause, underscoring NATO’s stance against Russian aggression.

Ahead of the summit, Russia launched a deadly missile barrage on Ukraine, including in Kyiv where a children’s hospital was tragically hit. This escalation underscored the urgency of NATO’s discussions on bolstering Ukraine’s defenses and deterring further Russian incursions.

President Zelensky of Ukraine, invited to the summit, expressed gratitude for NATO’s support but urged for stronger actions against Russia. Biden also aimed to expand NATO’s role in addressing global challenges, including managing China’s rising influence, by inviting key Pacific partners to the summit.

However, Biden faces challenges both at home and abroad. Domestically, former President Donald Trump’s criticisms of NATO and controversial proposals regarding Ukraine pose electoral challenges. Internationally, NATO’s outgoing Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted uncertainties, noting delays in US congressional approvals for Ukrainian military aid.

As NATO leaders convened, discussions centered on Ukraine’s aspirations for NATO membership, which enjoys widespread support from Eastern European nations. Yet, concerns persist among leaders like Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, wary of provoking further conflict with nuclear-armed Russia.

The summit continues with formal meetings of the North Atlantic Council and gala dinners, amid a sweltering heat wave in Washington, symbolizing the intensity of diplomatic efforts and strategic deliberations shaping NATO’s future amidst global uncertainties.
