Summary:

  • Donald Trump returns to social media platform X, marking his comeback with a conversation with Elon Musk.
  • The discussion focused on key topics, including Kamala Harris, the European Union, and climate change.
  • Trump’s campaign faces challenges as polls show him trailing Kamala Harris in key battleground states.

Donald Trump has made his return to the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, after a period of absence. On Monday, he participated in a live conversation on X Spaces with the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, who has openly endorsed Trump’s re-election campaign. The discussion, delayed by about 40 minutes due to a “massive” cyberattack on the platform, drew around 1.2 million listeners.

During the nearly two-hour session, Trump and Musk discussed a range of topics, including Trump’s Democratic rival Kamala Harris, the European Union, and climate change. Trump took the opportunity to revisit his usual talking points, claiming he is the target of a political vendetta, while Musk reiterated his support for Trump’s campaign.

Trump currently has more than 88.2 million followers on X, which was renamed in 2023.

This return to X comes after a lengthy hiatus following his suspension from the platform in 2021, when Twitter banned him for “the risk of further incitement of violence” after the January 6 Capitol attack. Although Musk restored Trump’s account in November 2022 after acquiring the platform, Trump had been largely inactive until this recent event, having previously posted only once to mark his surrender to authorities in Georgia.

Trump’s reappearance on X coincides with a challenging period for his 2024 presidential campaign. With Joe Biden stepping aside, Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz have revitalized the Democratic campaign, leading to a slip in Trump’s poll numbers. Recent surveys show Harris gaining ground in key battleground states, putting Trump on the defensive as he navigates his campaign’s rocky patch.
