Solar storm surrounds Earth, threatening satellites and power grids

Earth Faces Risks from Incoming Solar Storms

Must read

Summary:

  • Pakistan’s Space Agency (Suparco) warns of a solar storm approaching Earth.
  • Three Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are en route, with the third being particularly powerful.
  • The storm may disrupt communication satellites, power grids, and space stations.

Earth is under threat from a powerful solar storm, according to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Commission (Suparco). The storm, driven by material and energy emitted from the Sun, could put communication satellites at risk.

Suparco reports that three Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are heading towards Earth. The first two, launched on August 7, were relatively minor M-class solar flares. However, the third, an X1.3-class solar flare, is much more powerful and poses a significant threat.

The effects of these plasma and magnetic waves are expected to reach Earth in the next three to four days. As the sun reaches its peak activity, the risks of geomagnetic storms increase, potentially causing radio blackouts, disabled satellites, and disruptions to cellular and GPS networks.
